Frequently Asked Questions About Birth Photography

WHY DO I NEED A BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHER?

The birth is one of the most important events in your life. Photography will keep the memories of every moment of that day. Your strength, your beauty, your partner's care and also, those first wonderful moments when you meet your baby.

Those who look at their photos after the birth, like re-living that exciting process, and sometimes, remember those moments that they had forgotten. Birth photos are a part of your story that you can share with your baby in the future. They can be a way of connection between you, your baby and other family members, allowing them to see and feel your experience.

The birth of a child is a day that will remain in your memory forever. Professional photographs will make the memories even more colourful and emotional.

HOW IS THE PROCESS ORGANISED?

We will meet with you and discuss all the details before the birth, including what kind of photos you would/wouldn't like to get.

The birth is unpredictable and can happen at any time! That's why I’m in touch with you from week 38 until the birth of your baby. This means I’m available 24/7 to come to you any time of the day or night.

DOES EVERYWHERE ALLOW TAKING PHOTOGRAPHS OF BIRTH?

It’s necessary to discuss the presence of a photographer at a hospital with your doctor beforehand. I photograph births in hospitals, maternity centres or at home. Most hospitals even allow to photograph c-section births.

WHEN DO YOU ARRIVE FOR BIRTH?

I’d like to be in place when you are in active labour (5cm or more dilated). But in order to arrive on time, I need to know in advance that you are having the first signs of labour. I will be in touch with you all the time to arrive at the right time.

HOW LONG WILL YOU STAY WITH ME?

I’m with you for the entire active labour period and stay for another 1-2 hours postpartum. If you are interested in a photosession for longer, especially if your family (siblings, grandparents, etc) are coming to visit, we can always add this to your package. Your baby's first meeting with your family can be unforgettable and remembered thanks to the photos.

HOW MANY PHOTOS WILL WE HAVE?

Every case is unique and depends on the unfolding of your story. But, you can expect 80-150 professionally edited images.

WHAT TO DO IF THE BIRTH IS VERY FAST?

The most important thing is good communication. It’s necessary to inform me of the first signs of the labour. The baby can be born quickly and this moment may not always be predictable. I will do my best to arrive on time and capture your full story. But even if things don't go as planned, I will still take as many photos as necessary - first breastfeeding, first sleeping, meeting the siblings and grandparents. And if necessary we will organise “First hours photosession” the next day.

WHY SHOULD I HAVE A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER INSTEAD OF ASKING MY PARTNER OR MY DOULA TO TAKE SOME PICTURES WITH MY MOBILE?

Professional photos are different from phone photos anyway. Working in a low-light room is not easy, and even with a good DSLR camera, it needs a lot of practice. I have a lot of experience taking photos long before I became a birth photographer. Also, you will surely need your partner for support and caring so that you can live through the labour together without distractions from anything else. So, if you want to keep professional photos to remember, it’s better to hire a photographer.

I DOUBT IT, BECAUSE IT'S A LITTLE CONFUSING TO HAVE A STRANGER IN THE ROOM AT SUCH AN INTIMATE MOMENT.

Firstly, we'll get to know each other beforehand. Secondly, I will do my best not to be seen during the birth. I’m very careful during the photo session and do not interfere in the process. My aim is to make you forget about me - also because in such a situation you get the most natural photos with the emotions you feel.

DO YOU TAKE VIDEOS?

Yes, it’s possible. Please text me if you have such a request.

I WOULD LIKE TO BE DARK DURING THE BIRTH, HOW WILL YOU TAKE PHOTOS?

As a professional photographer, I have equipment that works in low light conditions. So we will definitely find a solution. We will also discuss in advance the possibility of using a flash during the birth.

DO YOU SHARE EVERY BIRTH ON SOCIAL MEDIA?

I love sharing inspirational birth photos. It may help someone realise how important it’s to invite a photographer to a birth and keep a photo of such a meaningful event. However, I absolutely respect families who wish to keep their birth photos private. During our first meeting, we will discuss exactly what you want or don't want to share.

WHAT IS THE PRICE OF A BIRTH PHOTOSHOOT?

Photographs of your baby's birth are feelings and emotions for a lifetime, and they are worth it.
